Background[]
Danny Elfman, who had previously collaborated with director Tim Burton on several films, was announced as the composer for Dumbo in July 2017. Elfman said that he wanted to honor the original film's music, but also create something new and different. He said that he used a lot of circus music and instruments, such as calliopes, accordions, and tubas, to create a whimsical and nostalgic sound. He also incorporated themes from the original film, such as "Casey Junior", "When I See an Elephant Fly", and "Pink Elephants on Parade". Elfman said that he enjoyed working on Dumbo because it was a "very emotional" and "very simple" story.
