The Fox and the Hound is a 1981 American animated buddy drama film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. The twenty-fourth feature in the Disney Animated Canon, it is based on Daniel P. Mannix's 1967 novel of the same name. The film was directed by Art Stevens, Ted Berman, and Richard Rich. The story was adapted by Larry Clemmons, David Michener, Peter Young, Burny Mattinson, Steve Hulett, Earl Kress, and Vance Gerry.

The film was one of Tim Burton's first animation jobs with the Disney company was as an animator. Along with several other animators like John Lasseter, who also got their start with the company, Burton worked on a team of artists to help bring the story to life.[1]

The Fox and the Hound was released to theatres on July 10, 1981. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive animated film produced to date, costing $12 million. Despite originally receiving mixed reviews, the film enjoyed as a moderate financial hit and has developed a low cult following and was nominated for three awards. A direct-to-video midquel was released in 2006.

  • This was the last animated Disney film to use the 1953 Buena Vista Distribution logo. The name would only be used on the closing credits until it would be replaced by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
