- He is broadly based on Victor Frankenstein, the protagonist of the novel Frankenstein (1818) by Mary Shelley. Similar characters in Tim Burton's work include Victor Frankenstein and Dr. Finkelstein.
- While Victor Frankenstein and the inventer are simular in their actions and abilites, their personalites are different. Frankenstein hated his creation, while the Inventor treated Edward as a son.
