Tyler Galpin is the secondary antagonist in Tim Burton's Netflix series, Wednesday. He is son of Sheriff Donovan Galpin and his late wife Francoise, and works as a part-time barista at the Weathervane, the local coffee shop in Jericho, Vermont. Like his mother, Tyler is a Hyde who forcibly falls under Laurel Gates's control to kill supernatural beings known as "outcasts".
Tyler is portrayed by Hunter Doohan.
Background[]
Personality[]
Tyler Galpin is the quintessential "boy-next-door". He is portrayed as an average, unassuming teenager in an average, unassuming town. He is sarcastic and seemingly immune to Wednesday's penchant for all things depressing and morbid. Tyler has a very strained relationship with his father, mostly due to him being severely neglected by him, and his consistent refusal to talk about the death of his mother, Francoise.
Tyler, while well-mannered, has a darker, more violent side. He previously, alongside his then-friends, vandalized the mural of Xavier Thorpe and assaulted him. He attended a boot camp the summer before the series takes place, and had court-ordered therapy sessions. His darker anger also shows itself when it comes to his father, with whom Tyler has a very strained relationship with, on account of the fact that Donovan neglects him and refuses to talk about Tyler's mother.
After Laurel Gates forcibly unlocks Tyler's Hyde through torture and chemical injections. His personality later turns dark and sadistic the more times he was ordered to transform. Completly brainwashed and under Gates’s control, Tyler begins to share Gates hatred for Nevermore, because even they reject Hydes, as they were banned from the school around thirty years before the series took place.
Physical Appearance[]
Tyler has light brown hair and green eyes, and freckles and moles across his face. He is 5'11".
As the Hyde, he is around 9 feet tall, has course blue hair and blue skin. He has very large, bloodshot eyes and notably sharp claws.
Biography[]
Relationships[]
Wednesday Addams[]
Initially, Tyler met Wednesday when she approached him during his shift at the Weathervane. He promised to take her out of town to the Burlington train station, and gives her the police report of her father Gomez Addams, which he stole from his father. The next day, he runs into her outside of Dr. Kinbott's office, letting her know that he believes her for saying that a monster killed Rowan, even though no one else does. While spying on his father in the woods, Tyler stops Wednesday from being spotted by Donovan and his bloodhound. He runs into her again when she's leaving the Sheriff's office, and asks her if she's going to the Rave'n. When she tells him that she was forced to ask Xavier he gets upset, saying "I thought we liked each other, but then you pull something like this and I have no idea where I stand. I mean, am I in the more then friends zone, or just a pawn in some game you're playing?" Later, he receives a letter in the tip jar from Wednesday–really written by Thing–asking him to attend the Rave'n with her. He arrives at her dorm room, much to her surprise, and the two attend the dance together. When entering, they are greeted by Marilyn Thornhill. When the dance is pranked by Tyler's former friends, Wednesday, upon touching Tyler, has a vision of Eugene getting attacked by the monster. On Wednesday's birthday, Tyler made and delivered a birthday cake that is 98% dark chocolate ganache, knowing her preferred color palette, which was given to her at the surprise birthday party thrown by Enid. When she visits the Weathervane he presents her with a latte that says "Happy Birthday" on it, telling her that he's been working on it all week. He asks her out again, on a "song free dinner", but she rejects him, saying that she doesn't have the time. However, she later calls him and says that she's changed her mind. However, this is only an excuse to go investigate the old Gates' mansion, bringing Enid along with the two of them. While there, Tyler gets attacked by the monster. Wednesday and Enid find him with deep scratches in his chest and, along with Xavier, they go back to the Galpin house, where Wednesday stitches him up. However, they quickly leave once Donovan returns home and blames Wednesday for hurting him. He bans the two from seeing each other. Ignoring that rule completely, Wednesday appears at the Weathervane again, this time with Uncle Fester in tow. Wednesday is looking at Nathaniel Faulkner's diary for information on the Hyde, and when Tyler comes over Wednesday explains to him what she knows. He also asks about rescheduling their date, and when Wednesday tries to deflect, he says that she "owes him", and that he'll plan something at Nevermore so she doesn't have to sneak out of campus. Wednesday meets him in the woods outside of Crackstone's Crypt, and he presents her with a black dahlia flower. He leads her inside the crypt, which he has decorated with fairy lights, a picnic, and a projector. He shows her a "horror movie", which turns out to be Legally Blonde. Once the movie ends, he once again tells Wednesday that he wants to be more than friends. When she tries to deflect him, he tells her not to diminish his feelings and that she's not going to scare him off. She tells him that she's not "more than friend" material, and that she almost killed him, to which he responds that he's tougher than she thinks. The two almost kiss, but are interrupted by his father and other officers, who are investigating the crypt for a bank robber. Later, while closing at the Weathervane, Wednesday visits him. She tells him that she's been thinking about who she can trust, now that Xavier has been arrested. Wednesday kisses him, and it appears the two will finally get together. However, while kissing, Wednesday has a vision, which shows Tyler, as the Hyde, killing Dr. Kinbott. She runs away. Wednesday tells Tyler to meet her in the woods behind Nevermore, and while he thinks it's another date, it turns into a kidnapping. Ajax, Bianca, Kent, Divina, and Yoko help Wednesday in chaining Tyler to a chair and interrogating him on being the Hyde, He refuses, and Wednesday results to torture, much to the dismay of her friends. They leave and tell Principal Weems what is happening. She calls the police, and Sheriff Galpin shows up to stop her. At the police station, Tyler goes to talk to Wednesday. He then asks her "what does it feel like to lose?", and warns her that something big is going to happen. When Wednesday goes to confront Laurel, she tells Wednesday all about how she unlocked Tyler's Hyde by telling him about his mother and then torturing him in the cave to bring the monster out of him for her to control. Laurel then knocks Wednesday unconscious, and she wakes up chained to the ceiling of Crackstone's Crypt, face to face with Tyler. He leaves at the request of Laurel. When Wednesday runs through the woods back to Nevermore she meets Tyler again. He transforms into the Hyde and tries to kill her, but is knocked to the ground by Enid in wolf form. The two get into an intense battle, and when Tyler is about to kill her, he is shot by his father. Enid then throws him into a tree, knocking him out. Unconscious, he transforms back to his human form, and his father runs to him. At the end of the season, Tyler is unconscious and locked in chains, riding in a transport vehicle en route to a psychiatric hospital for treatment. The last shot is him waking up and transforming once again into the Hyde.
